Building Codes in relation to Adaptive Reuse:
There are many challenges found when bringing older buildings into compliance with modern building codes. Sometimes City codes have to be adapted to fit these older remodels.
Los Angeles is an example of a city that had to adapt their Adaptive Reuse Ordinance in order to make it easier and less expensive to update dilapidated older buildings.
The City of Tyler, Texas is another example of a city that also had to adopt a new code to encourage the reuse of older existing buildings. They approved a new code developed specifically for older building to encourage the redevelopment and reuse of older building that would not have passed under existing codes that were meant for new construction.
